Cart Paths & Routing
Cart paths are planned around drainage, turning geometry, shoulders, tie-ins, and the way carts and maintenance traffic actually move through the property. The objective is a durable route that sits naturally within the hole.

Runoff may keep moving downhill, but when it reaches the point where it should leave the path, a raised shoulder can trap it against the pavement edge. Moisture then works into the edge while daily cart and maintenance traffic continue loading the same area.
Keep drainage outlets open and shoulders at, or slightly below, the path where runoff needs to leave.
"Design the corner for the cart, not for the drawing."
At hard 90-degree turns, carts tend to cut the corner. The same tires repeatedly leave the supported surface and climb back onto it, concentrating traffic at the pavement edge.
Where space allows, widen and taper turns so carts remain on supported surface through the intersection.

Players may pull closer to the tee, make room for another cart, stop beside friends, or move aside for service traffic. Over time, the same departure point can wear the turf around an otherwise clean tee complex.
Use path geometry, ropes, barriers, planting, or other routing cues to make the intended movement the natural movement.

Mature trees, overhead branches, steep grades, narrow corridors, soft turf, and limited staging can control how material reaches the work area. Width at ground level is only part of the access equation.

Repairs beside established trees frequently expose roots within the path structure. Smaller roots may be manageable, while larger structural roots can materially change the scope and may affect tree health if cut.
Expose carefully, communicate significant roots to the course, and review the repair approach before continuing.

Post-close work removes tee-sheet pressure and can simplify equipment movement. When ground conditions are firm, excavation, drainage correction, granular reinstatement, and mechanical compaction can proceed with less risk of rutting sensitive turf.
Freeze-thaw does not replace compaction; where the schedule allows, the off-season can provide additional settlement time before final paving.

Cold ground and low ambient temperatures can shorten the working window quickly. On steep or restricted paths, roller access and production sequencing need to be resolved before asphalt reaches the section.
Keep trucks, paver, handwork, and breakdown rolling coordinated so initial compaction begins while the mix remains workable.

A common cause is shoulder buildup. Soil and organic material can rise above the path edge and block the point where runoff is supposed to leave. Water may still move downhill, but it becomes trapped at the outlet and begins working into the unsupported edge.
Access is planned before excavation begins. We review route width, overhead branches, slopes, staging areas, turf condition, and the equipment required to move material in and out without creating unnecessary damage around the work.
It can be. Once the course is closed, tee-sheet pressure is removed and firm ground can sometimes improve equipment access. Excavation, drainage work, granular reinstatement, and mechanical compaction may be completed first, with final paving placed only when conditions support it.
Significant roots are treated as a course constraint, not something to cut automatically. The condition is exposed carefully and reviewed with the course before the repair continues. Larger structural roots may require a change in scope or specialist input.
